If You Don't Manage Your Mind, It Will Manage You!

by Zeynep Ölçer 05 Dec 2024

We have all felt like our minds have taken over us at some point in our lives. Constantly recurring thoughts, endless worries, regrets about the past, and anxieties about the future… These are all signs that we are starting to be controlled by our minds. When we lose control of our minds, we lose control of our lives. So how can we take control of our minds?

Controlling our minds is much more possible and actually much more important than we think. Here are the ways to control our minds and live without being a slave to our minds.

The first step is to become aware of your thoughts. We often get caught up in the flow of thoughts that pass through our minds without stopping to think about them. This is where mindfulness comes into play. Mindfulness means watching the thoughts in our minds from the outside and simply observing them without judging them. This reduces the power our thoughts have over us. When you start watching the thoughts that pass through your mind throughout the day, you can protect yourself from getting lost in negative thoughts.

When our minds think a thought, it is often accompanied by an emotion. For example, the thought, “I will fail,” can make you feel inadequate. But remember, thoughts are temporary. We should not allow a thought to trigger our emotional reactions. Instead of allowing your thoughts and feelings to define you, accept that they are just clouds in your mind.

When negative thoughts take over our minds, one of the best ways to reduce their impact is to reframe them. When a negative thought pops into your mind, try to replace it with a positive perspective. For example, replace the thought, “This job will be hard,” with the thought, “This job will teach me new things.” Reframing your thoughts in a positive way boosts your self-confidence and breaks the hold our mind has over you.

Meditation and breathing exercises are one of the most effective ways to calm the mind and control thoughts. When we meditate, we learn to watch the thoughts come and go. This helps us to better observe our thoughts and reduce their impact. When we bring ourselves to the present moment by taking deep and controlled breaths, we slow down the impact of anxiety and worry on our mind.

Our mind and body are interconnected. Physical activity reduces the tension in our mind and our stress levels. Doing sports, going for a walk or doing relaxing exercises like yoga calms our mind and lightens our mental load. Physical activities contribute to our mental health by increasing our endorphin levels, which makes us feel happier.

Thoughts come and go all the time. But when we get caught up in them, our minds take control over us. When a negative thought comes into our mind, we should let it pass without getting caught up in it. When we realize that a thought is fleeting, its power over us diminishes. We don’t have to be attached to every thought in our mind; watching them and letting them pass is an effective way to maintain our mental peace.

Our minds are often filled with regrets from the past or worries about the future. However, focusing on the present moment calms our minds and helps us experience the peace of this moment. By focusing on the present moment, we distance ourselves from the burdens of the past and the uncertainties of the future. This prevents our minds from taking over. Focusing on what is happening around us in the present moment helps us to free our minds.

Gratitude is a powerful practice that helps clear our minds of negative thoughts. Thinking about things you are grateful for every day creates a positive environment in our minds. When we develop the habit of gratitude, gratitude sprouts in place of negative thoughts in our minds, which helps us create a healthier mindset.

Being able to control our minds actually means taking our freedom. Control your mind and don't let it take you prisoner!
